"Child Soldiers." Global Issues in Context Online Collection. Detroit: Gale, 2015. Global Issues In Context. Web. 31 May 2016. http://find.galegroup.com/gic/infomark.do?&source=gale&idigest=7f24c0d68b59fad788b328c1b5b426fa&prodId=GIC&userGroupName=s2153&tabID=&docId=CP3208520022&type=retrieve&contentSet=GREF&version=1.0 This site's article gives general information on the issue of child soldiers. It talks about examples of organizations that use child soldiers, as well as what child soldiers are forced to do. Possible reasons for recruitment are also listed. The effects of forcing children to become soldiers are talked about and include psychological as well as physical trauma. The article then goes on to list some primary sources such as legislation that has been passed on the issue, statistics, incidents of arrests and examples of organizations. It is a useful source for letting people understand the topic if they know little to nothing about it. It provides assorted information on many sides of the issue of child soldiers, such as acts that have been passed, places where it is an issue, and some statistics on how many child soldiers there are. This is one of the best sources, as it comes from a reliable website and was last edited in 2016, very recently. The source includes facts on many different areas, so it is not biased. The goal of this source is to offer readers interested in the issue a brief explanation on what child soldiers refers to, where it is an issue, and other facts in a condensed article. This source offered some very helpful facts and statistics on the issue. It clearly shows that child soldiers are widespread and a very big issue, and gives us solid facts on why. We used this source to get information for parts of the FAQ, maps and statistics, and general information. If anyone were to say that child soldiers was not an issue, the data offered in this article would help bring light to the problem. Siobhan Flanagan
"Abwehr 1109: Soldier, Executioner & Pro Lifer." : MILITARY USE OF CHILDREN. Blogger.com, 12 Feb. 2015. Web. 31 May 2016. <http://soldierexecutionerprolifer2008.blogspot.com/2015/02/military-use-of-children.html>. This website gives basic information about child soldiers, such as what it is, what's currently being done, and 11 facts about it. This is a useful source, however, the information could be unreliable, and has to be checked, because all of this site's facts come from other places, some questionable, such as Wikipedia. This source was helpful to me. It helped to shape my argument by teaching me about topics involving child soldiers that hadn't previously seen, such as the education/economic opportunities that can help the children after serving as child soldiers. I can use this source as a response to FAQs, and possibly in the glossary, because it has basic information that is good to know about my topic. Abby Joseph
"Child Recruitment and Use | United Nations Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict." United Nations Office of the Special Representative of the SecretaryGeneral for Children and Armed Conflict. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 June 2016. This website provides information regarding child soldiers. More specifically it goes in depth to provide information on what roles they play in the military, the effect it has on them, but also what roles governments and international law have on the situation. This is a useful source because it provides important information . It is a reliable source because it is a United Nations website, which is government controlled and cannot be edited freely like a Wikipedia page. I found this website helpful because it gave me facts that can be used in a section like solutions because it is telling you what is going on and then you can use that information to come up with a beneficial solution. It also helped to shape the approach taken on what information needed to be told and how to go about telling the world those things. Molly Doyle
Bleasdale, Marcus. "Child Soldiers." Human Rights Watch. VII For Human Rights Watch, 2013. Web. 02 June 2016. This organization is for many different types of human rights situations, but a section of the website focuses on the rights - or lack thereof - of child soldiers. This website has a extensive list of primary sources, from reports to videos to news releases. Considering this website is for an organization, and it does include many primary sources with validity and reliability, everything on it seems legitimate. This source was very helpful. They had many ways to learn and research about our topic. It helped me understand the topic on a much higher level, as I was able to read and watch real life situations and videos, showing me the true nature of child soldiers. It was very helpful towards finding a primary source, as they had so many on the site itself. |

Mark, Monica. "Joseph Kony Child Soldier Returns to Terrorised Boyhood Village." The Guardian. Guardian News and Media, 22 July 2013. Web. 02 June 2016. A man named Edward is interviewed about his experiences when he was captured by rebels and forced to become a part of the Lord's Resistance Army at the age of 13. In the video, he is brought back to the same village he grew up in, and he reflects on what he had done and what he saw in the village. He was very close to the head of the LRA, and so had an inside perspective on what the group's logic and ideas were. The source is very useful because it provides a first-hand account of the issue of child soldiers through the perspective of a man who was one of the child soldiers captured and forced into his position. One other source is an interview with a survivor, while another is the child soldiers prevention act, and the last is a video on current child soldiers events. The source, however, is a little biased, since it only provides information on the LRA. Also, since Edward was very close to the leader, he gave in to many of the demands to do what they wanted in order to avoid being killed, and he is mentally scarred from the event. It is mentioned in the source that the LRA and Kony himself used mental manipulation to get those under their command to do what they wanted them to do, and in turn, Edward says he felt that Kony was a "godly person", despite everything awful he did. The goal of the source is to let people know what the experiences are of a child soldier and what they feel about what they were exposed to, because they truly understand what it is like to be a child soldiers and what child soldiers must do. This source helped us gain a better understanding of what child soldiers were susceptible to, and how they were treated in their experiences. Also, since this person had a closer position to the leader of the LRA, he had more information on the group's workings and their logic and plans. From there, we can understand how these groups work, and in turn work to find a better solution to the issue of child soldiers. Edward's personal account is very convincing for people unwilling to believe the horrors of what child soldiers are put through, and the heavy emotions can help urge people to take action on the issue. Web. 02 June 2016. <http://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2015/01/29/382482527/a-former-child-soldier-finds-escape-heaven-through-his-music>. This NPR article is an interview with former Sudanese child soldier Emmanuel Jal. He talks about what it was like to be a child soldier, his beliefs in regards to the actions taken about war crimes committed by child soldiers, and how he has reintegrated himself into a normal life since escaping the South Sudanese armed groups. This is a useful source because it gives a first person account of what it is to be a child soldier. This is helpful, because while other sources just contain facts, this contains the emotions involved with the military activities, along with an explanation of what helped a former child soldier to re-assimilate to a non combat life. This interview is biased against the use of child soldiers, for the purpose of raising awareness. This was a helpful source to us. It helped us to shape our argument on the topic of child soldiers by being able to see how a person is effected by being recruited at a young age for war. We can use this to help show others why it is so important to help prevent the recruitment of child soldiers, so that children who live in areas with the potential to be recruited can be saved. 7, Annex, Recent Relevant Legislation, and Part I. Part I – The Child Soldier Prevention Act of 2008 TITLE IV—CHILD SOLDIERS PREVENTION(n.d.): n. pag. Web.
This is the direct document from the Child Soldier Prevention Act of 2008. It is the document that was discussed and decided upon by the United States and the various other countries that were present and wanted a change.
This is a very helpful source because it gives insight into the talks that happened and the outcome of those talks. But it is also useful because it is informing more people of the specifics that go into situations regarding the child soldiers. I found this document very useful because when trying to fins solutions to the issue it gave insight into what is already being done. Also it helps us to figure out why, it's not working and what potential changes could be made to make a bigger difference in stopping the use of child soldiers. Molly DoyleAuthor Unknown. "South Sudan's Schools Occupied by Military." Human Rights Watch. VII For Human Rights Watch, 14 Dec. 2015. Web. 02 June 2016.
This primary source is a video created by Human Rights Watch (HRW) to promote activism and truly demonstrate how children are affected by child soldier regimes on a daily basis. It shows how the occupation of the military can truly affect the psychology of the children. [assess] [reflect] |
